Thinking about social deviance & deviance as sin Objectivist approach: certain characteristics make an act or person socially deviant, deviance stems from the act or person. )t"s a (cid:498)common sense(cid:499) approach: what characteristics are we talking about, harm (in any way, rarity (not very common, reaction (creates negative reaction, norms (violates social norms of society) What if it"s just a little bit harmful, is it still deviant (cid:523)eg. deviant, but not harmful (cid:523)being rude, taking (cid:883)(cid:882) items through the (cid:498)express(cid:499: the issue of (cid:498)threshold(cid:499, that which occurs infrequently (eg. homicide) lane etc. ) Objectivist approach: rarity: socially deviant behaviour is rare, critique: Everyone: the issues of normative (cid:498)consensus(cid:499) standards/expectations. Soc 2070: rare, but not deviant (acts of heroism, lottery, common, and deviant (domestic violence, tax fraud) Objectivist approach: reaction: socially deviant behaviour generates negative social reaction. Subjectivist approach: examples: drinking and driving problem with it, over time, it was constructed as such, the act was the same; out perception changed.
