Drugs have physical reality a study and an image. Hallucinogen (see things/sense things not there, and have a emotional effect): lsd, mescaline"s, mushrooms. Marijuana (been called as type one narcotic, but chemist believe it belongs in its own group & its effects aren"t evident) Moral panics: furors or panics over exaggerated threats to moral order (know this for midterm) Marijuana (and some other drugs) became almost accepted in the late 1970s. Drugs became more deviant in 1980"s, peaking as a national concern in 89 (subsided) a lot of ppl ended up in jail currently not as high today either. Drug use & drug panics are not directly correlated social awareness. When demonizing marijuana for its own effects is insufficient, its critics label it a gateway drug . Alc & tabaco are both addictive and psychoactive & socially reinforced. Rare for someone to do illegal drugs w/out first using alcohol/ tobacco. Ppl who drink 10 times more likely to do drugs.
