Jennifer toth"s the mole people discusses the homeless people who live in the tunnels beneath new york city. By observing and interviewing them, she found that the homeless people are fairly self- sufficient and many have been living down there for years. There was a hierarchy (one of the homeless men was clearly in charge, helped resolve disputes between members of the society, and acted as a mentor to new members) Membership they only let those in dire straits to live among them; they are very good at assessing who is in need and who is not. Ambivalence the mole people do not want to be part of life on top of the tunnels (they don"t want the job or the mundane lifestyle, and prefer the freedom underneath instead) Social class poor and working class poor.
