SOC 2700 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Bourgeoisie, Gender Inequality, Proletariat
Document Summary
Lecture 7: con ict theory & gender based theories. Societies are more appropriately characterized by con ict rather than by consensus. Pluralist versions: society composed of different group struggling to see their interests maintained (therefore con ict occurs) Class-con ict versions: two classes exist in society, both attempting to dominate. *economic organization of society; means of production; capitalism; owners (bourgeoisie) vs. workers (proletariat) Unique in approach of examining cause of con ict. Means of production changes over time - examine how classes relate to means of production (owners vs. workers) *today it is manufacturing, historically farming and agrarian society. *maximize their power and interest to generate wealth. *criminalize any behaviour that interferes with the pursuit of pro t (i. e robbery, theft, illegal strikes, loitering) *laws that protect workers in ways that maximize pro t potential of the dominant class. *the owners reap the pro ts; workers receive nothing.
