Criminality learned the same way as other behaviour: criminal behaviour is learned in interaction with other persons in a process of communication. People learn to perform criminal acts the same way they learn conventional behaviours. Can learn from books, music, movies, but sutherland focuses on learning from others: the principle part of learning criminal behaviour occurs in intimate personal groups. The greater the intimacy in social groups, the more effective the communication of the message. Crimes vary in complexity: burglary, corporate price fixing, drug smuggling, prostitution.
