Primary psychological human needs are to search for status. Together these force us to come together and form groups. We all have legiimate needs of achieving these needs no legiimate means. If you do not have legiimate means they create a deviant group. These people are rejected from society and form alternaive means to achieve goals (1) cliford shaw: cultural transmission successful deviants = role models. They have respect youth socializaion into deviant values (2) sutherland: diferenial associaion (we don"t associate with everyone; university students will socialize with other university students not gangs) Teaches people breaking the law is a good thing. Gangs teach you how to do things. Diferenial associaion teaches you how to become a criminal. Intensity: respect for the source (3) cloward & ohlin. Opportunity structure: job market is the problem. Lower classes: lose to middle class = status frustraion ---> subculture (4) albert cohen. Poorly educated = cannot compete with mc kids.
