Our criteria of fairness and assessment has changed over time. We now value merit, but it hasn"t always been this way (used to value elders, used to value different religions higher) We are entirely guided by norms (there are even norms that follow us in death) Parsons never said that one society (modern or pre-modern) was better than the other. This chart is justice, so long as these norms and criteria are considered then we live in a just society (when society is organized around the principles of organizational society, our interactions are patterned after these norms) Personal: feelings/emotions are extremely important, connections between people, loyalty. Impersonal = no emotions, not a loving of affectionate connection. Modern society tells us that we shouldn"t have emotional bonds (teachers shouldn"t emotionally bond with their students, it should be very business like) We move away from anything that attaches us to someone emotionally.
