SOC 3380 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Orgasm, Sexual Script Theory, Heteronormativity
Document Summary
The birds & the bees: gendered lessons in sex education. Lack of explicit information on a wide range of topics/ practices. Consent, body image, lgbtq focus, non-phallocentric, birth control options. Perpetuate a lot of the same messages learnt in school. Still framed as a de-eroticised, disembodied (cid:494)scientific kind of thing(cid:495) Cautionary tales, communicating mistrust of men/boys, and having low expectations for sex. With sons, mothers reproduce discourse that males are the knowing, active sexual agents. Implicitly accepts that boys will be sexually active. Little to say about sexual pleasure and intimacy focus on fears, health, well-being (only one half of the story) masturbation as a point of avoidance. Womens self worth and moral value is inherently linked to their body and what they do or do not do with it. Perpetuated through chastity, linked to ideas of shame. 1 in 6 girls in america take a purity pledge.
