Majority between 15 and 24 do not report use of illicit drugs, tobacco or frequent heavy alc consumption. Typically substance abuse increases with age during teen years. Little variation between provinces with substance abuse. Been used for nutrition, relaxation, medicine, pleasure and religious worship. Alberta, manitoba and quebec legal age = 18. Acts as a nervous system depressant, initially producing feelings of relaxation and diminished inhibitions. Depending on amount can lead to intoxication. Much less common than drinking in youth, but still one of the most common youth substances. More than 80% of smokers had smoked their first cigarette at or before 15. With exception of weed, illicit drug use is not common in general youth population. 26% (15-24) reported using weed, while only 6% said they had used, coke, heroin, meth, speed, mdma etc.
