Teens tend to believe that no one seems to understand them. They compared the behaviour to a temper tantrum in a child, its just in a bigger body. There is issues with attitude, lack of appreciation. The thinking part of the brain continues to grow past the age of 6. The certain skills they practice will strengthen certain pathways. Pre frontal cortex is involved in the strategic thinking process and decision making, organization (this part is not fully developed in the teen years) Because they have an underdeveloped pre frontal cortex they to not make rational decisions. Regulation of mood is in the prefrontal cortex as well (which may explain their drastic mood swings) The mood swings may be due hormonal changes as well. The changes in the prefrontal cortex allow individuals to regulate their emotions and make more strategic decisions and have more rationality.
