There is a time in which the physiology of a person was believed to be a link to criminality (shape of your ears) The role of religion was significant in these early years. There way of explaining social deviance was attributed to witchcraft. In smaller communities it is a lot easier for people to become labelled deviant because everyone seems to know your business. Evil became a way of understanding deviance (becomes a metaphor) That there was a demon forcing this individual to commit these violent and deviant acts. There were many named liable for labeling as a witch. Women could be labelled as witches because they gave birth to a child with a birth defect. Because of the life expectancy a lot of these people being prosecuted and labelled witches were likely youth. We had a lot of problems with witch hunts.
