Interest sparked by prison farm closures is surprising: Only 300 prisoners working on 6 federal farms in 2009. Farms were neither large nor modern enough to be indispensable to government officials and correctional administrators and had little appeal for scholars and activists who traditionally support the idea of therapeutic farming.
