Week 9: courts and society inclusiveness and juries. Pre-democratic society, judges are a part of ruling class. Chosen from clergy and from the upper class. Democracy rational legal authority positions of lawyers and judges are based on merit. Historical traditions up until 1960"s, legal professions were open to all people (eg. women, black people, etc. Provinces bc asians were discriminated against. Gender law schools did not admit women until the late 1950"s. Men did not agree and tried to pressure women out of law school. Current demographic trends more women entering law school than males. Females and males (young vs. old) having more females going to law school. More women are being called to the bar and practicing law. Female lawyers tend to be younger than males. Implications: wages and partnership tend to make less money than males. Less likely to be partners in large firms.
