Role theory: adoption of behavioral patterns to meet social expectations (merton, We adopt multiple roles, tension and role strain . This is often seen for a police officer due to the fact that they are expected to engage in many roles at once creating a strain as you"re being pulled in many directions. Organizations on the other hand will not have persons who are more focused on other issues than professional do a good job. Thus, they try to minimize the amount of strain. Order maintenance: traffic, crowd control, disputes, accidents etc. Not as desirable (this is important, if it not seen as desirable, this is seen as added stress) Especially after the 1990"s (good part of community policing) Data entry and management (contemporary officers are constantly consumed with the need to collect, analyze and store information) They hate paperwork as it is time consuming and tedious and takes away from the roles that they prefer the most.
