There is policing done by the book and other done by the street. System of values, attitudes, modes of behavior and life-styles of a social group that is somewhat distinct from but yet is nevertheless connected to dominant culture. There is an overlapping relationship between the two. Albert cohen 1955: general theory of subcultures. They form due to a response in regards to a similar challenge within the environment and that is what pulls them together. The same goes for police officers, they are encouraged to only have relationships with other officers and cut ties with those not in this culture. Subculture forms as a function of formal membership. When you become a cop, it is inevitable that you are now part of this culture. You generally do not have a choice unlike the others. If you do not, you are generally going to get fired or feel very uncomfortable.
