Document Summary

Officers surveyed at different two different police departments. Found 7 different groups of officers that seemed to share common norms and values: traditionalists. Do(cid:374)"t see pu(cid:271)li(cid:272) as helpful (cid:449)he(cid:374) it (cid:272)o(cid:373)es to poli(cid:272)i(cid:374)g (cid:894)does(cid:374)"t (cid:373)ea(cid:374) they do(cid:374)"t trust the(cid:373), just do(cid:374)"t thi(cid:374)k they (cid:449)ill go out of the (cid:449)ay to help(cid:895) Generally have an unfavourable view of supervisors and procedural guidelines (want independence) Think community policing is a waste of time (see themselves as crime fighters) These officers only made up 9% of the sample (but they were readily identifiable) Generally see the public as somewhat uncooperative (they also do not trust the public) They also have an unfavourable view of supervisors, but they favour procedure. Very strong law enforcement mentality: peacekeepers. Dislike aggressive patrol (not big on crime fighting) Follow due process: old pros, lay-lows, dirty harry enforcers, anti-organizational street cops. Suggests the idea that the police culture is far more diverse than we may think.
