SOC 3750 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Late Modernity, Sousveillance, Risk Society
Document Summary
Police, media, and communications is the media a watchdog or a partner/ Media as watchdog investigating reporting, access to info, freedom of press, transparency/accountability. Depends on access to information from the police department, but are less likely now to get that information. Police departments are reluctant to give any information. Hard investigative data is becoming less likely, cost of this kind of reporting is going up. Media"s ability of holding police departments accountability is being undermined by the economic system. Media often repeat press releases (crandon & dunne 1997; mcgovern and lee. 2010), will repeat the news release from the police department and exactly reproducing it. Whatever the construction the police want people to see is exactly put through the media in an efficient and fast way. Hence, ideology often legitimize police ideology and world view. A bit of both, leaning towards partner but depends on the media organizaiton. Partnership role as police control info more effectively.
