Unique challenges of oversight in undercover investigations. Police feel the pressure to produce results (usually homicide or missing persons) Developed by the rcmp to elicit confessions in missing persons or homicide. Undercover officers pose as members of a criminal organization. Officers involve target in fake criminal activities to demonstrate the power of the organization: physical assaults, money laundering, drug trafficking, mob style hits. Once trust is solidified target introduced to mr. big the crime boss: demands admission to crime in exchange for protection and acceptance. Technique used over 350 times in canada. Success rate between 75% and 95: police induced false confessions leading cause of wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice, myth of the psychological interrogation. Innocent person would never confess to a crime that they did not commit.
