Recall the experiment investigating the e ect of calorie restriction on longevity in mice. Mice were randomly assigned to one of 6 diets: a control group that were allowed to eat an unlimited amount, r1, r2, r3, r4, and r5. We also make statements like: we can be 95% con dent that the di erence in population mean survival time between the r2 and r1 diets lies somewhere in the interval (5,11). What is the probability both come up heads: two six-sided dice are rolled. These are two examples of probability experiments . In a probability experiment, we cannot predict individual outcomes with certainty, but we may know the long-run distribution of the outcomes. The probability of an outcome is the proportion of times that outcome would occur in a very long (in nite) series of trials. Simple events are the most basic outcomes of the experiment. The sample space of an experiment is the set of all simple events.
