Document Summary

Topic iv: the cell cycle, mitosis, meiosis: 2 cell types based on chromosome (xm) content, sex cells (gametes): 23 different xms = haploid (n) includes ovum (egg) + sperm : somatic cells. Cells of body except cells undergoing/resulting from meiosis . Each somatic cell contains 23 different xm pairs . 23 xms from mom (ovum) paired with 23 xms from dad (sperm) = 46 xms (diploid/2n somatic cell) . Xms and xm pairs are numbered 1-23: : 1 to 22 = autosomal xms (autosomes) E. g. hair + eye colour, height, etc : 23 = sex xm. Contain genes that determine sex, xx=f xy=m . Gene = unit of heredity = a region of dna which contains information for synthesis of proteins . The xms that make up each pair are identical in length, centromere position, and have genes for same trait (eg eye colour) in same location (locus) .
