BIOL 2420 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Carbonic Anhydrase, Peripheral Chemoreceptors, Baroreceptor
Document Summary
Very poor of oad of oxygen to tissues in fetus, this is ne since there is very limited movement and small size, doesn"t require too much oxygen. Only of oads about 15 to 20% of oxygen. Binds to heme groups with >200x higher af nity than o2, thus markedly lowering blood o2 content at any given po2 and/or [hb] Hb goes through circulation but does not of oad or uptake anything. Co is found in very very low concentrations in our body. In smokers there is about 7 to 10% of co in our system (blood picks up and of oads about 10% less) - affects the athletic ability of smokers. Our bodies cant sense the presence of co in our blood. Hbf has a similar co af nity to hba, however, co becomes trapped in fetal circulation ([cohb] levels ~ 2x higher)
