Document Summary

Carl rogers called this the actualizing tendency: the moive to actualize or bring upon growth and posiive charge. According to this theory, there are 3 basic and universal psychological needs. Autonomy: feeling free and able to make choices about ones acions, being regulaing and able to determine ones own acions and plans as opposed to feeling like a pawn at the mercy of others fate. Competence: feeling efecive at your own acions and having the opportuniies and experiences to exercise, expand and express your own abiliies. Relatedness: feeling connected to others, having people to care for and receiving that same care back, can come from feeling a sense of belonging from a community. People must balance the 3 basic and universal needs with the nutriments provided by the external environment: fostering autonomy: autonomy support. To saisfy your autonomy, people must feel they can act out of their own voliion.
