Meninges = consists of 3 layers of connective tissue or membrane; surround & protect the brain and spinal cord: dura mater (tough mother) like leather, arachnoid (spider web, pia mater (tender mother) Arachnoid barrier = cells of outermost arachnoid layer have tight junctions b/w them: no tight junctions in granulations, prevents spread from dura into the subarachnoid space, keep substances either in or out. Pia mater = delicate membrane; 2-3 cells thick. Invests the surfaces of the brain: attaches to end feet of arachnoid trabeculae, closely follows all sulci/surfaces of brain, arteries and veins penetrate the pia when they enter/leave the brain susbtance. *drained into blood system through the arachnoid granulations that empty into venous sinuses. Foramina magendie (cisterna magna) or foramina luschka (pontine cistern) Part of the bbb is important in regulating the formation, circulation and absorption of. Part of the bbb is controlled by endothelial cells and astrocytes.
