ACB 406.3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cell Membrane, Urothelium, Intercalated Disc
Document Summary
Epithelium = cover body surfaces, line body cavities, tubes and internal closed cavities such as the vascular system. Functions as selective barriers b/w the external environment or luminal contents and the connective tissue below. *all of these are present in all epithelia. Epithelioid does not rest on a basement membrane. Some/most epithelia: are oxygenated and nourished from underlying ct, derived from ectoderm except mesothelium and endothelium (derived from mesoderm, form exocrine glands. Basement membrane (or basal lamina) = narrow layer of extracellular matrix b/w epidermis and underlying ct. Functions: support epithelial cells, anchor epithelial cells to connective tissue, permeability filter (+/-) (anionic filters) **carbohydrates & proteoglycans in bm can be stained pink or blue to visualize bm, but not h and e. Azan stain = bm is blue, nucleus is red. Periodic acid shift = bm is pink (stains carbohydrates) Simple, pseudostratified = single layer of cells; all in contact w/ bm.
