Document Summary
Bull traits are important because each bull will sire 30-50 calves. Cow traits are important because a bout 50% of the feed required to produce a nished steer carcass is used to maintain the cow. Dehorning reduces injury ( genetics can get rid of these ) Castration - reduces aggression, control mating, makes for less stress at slaughter which cause the meat to go a dark colour. Stress - dark cutter, all this meat goes to pet food. Nutrient supply must be balanced with cows nutrient requirement year round. Nutrient supply affected by season of year. Nutrient requirements affected by season of calving. Lactation always demands far more energy and protein. Why we add grain into ration into feed of pregnant cow. Intensive because there is a large concentration of animals in a small space, large feedlot typically have their own feed mills. Feedlot will purchase weaned calves and feed to market weight and sell them to packing plants.
