Lecture 2: The Horse Industry: Local, National, Global
Components of the horse industry:
-Core of the industry involves/driven by use of horses or ownership of horses
-Supplying horses (breeders, dealers, auction houses)
oSupplying horses starts with breeders, then there are dealers who are
commissioned to buy horses and usually involved in the upper level of the
industry) used for expensive horses or importing horses)
oAuction houses
oThere are leases and rentals for horses
oBreed associations are suppose to work for breed members and determine the
betterment of the breed
Typically, do not control directly what animals can be breed as long as
those animals are registered
Some European associations have horses have to meet specific
requirements before there offspring can be registered with the
association
-Use of horses (trainers, instructors/coaches, competition/event organizers, tourism)
oTrainers do not have to have any credentials
-Support ( goods and services)
oFeed: there are feed companies, they can be very specific in diet going all the
way to specific for breed
oTack and equipment
oCare: regular care would include farrier, veterinarian, dentist. BUT can go further
in care like: reading aura, chiropractor, massage therapy, boarder, rehabilitation
therapist, physiotherapy
oResearch: organizations for research
oJournalism: is important for getting what people do in universities into the
public, or popular concerns to public
Global Horse Industry:
Global population size: 60 million horses and 45 million donkeys
Most horses in the US
- Equids in nontechnological societies are used mostly for agriculture labor, there exists
little to no international trade of these horses and the major issue for these animals are
care and welfare (expensive in developing countries)
- Internationally, there does exist an industry that supplies education, tools, and care to
working horses in developing countries
- Individuals dependent on working horses may be faced with other types of legislative
issues that impede both the use of the horses and the livelihoods of the people
dependent on them.
