there are many types of equipment available to push up feed
-hydraulic feed pushers have not been widely adopted, partly because the tack and plough can
interfere with crossovers and with feed delivery
-the juno feed pusher can be programmed to travel a variety of routes at varied distances from
the manager wall depending on the time of day
-Most farmers use a plough on a tractor or bobcat
Scoring a feed bunk:
-Do this 1 hour before feeding
-Score is between 1 and 5
o0= no feed
o1= scattered feed (>5% of amount fed)
o2= thin layer (5-10%)
o3= 2-3 inches layer (25%)
o4= >3 inches layer (>50%)
o5= feed untouched
-aim for score of 2
oadjust after >3 days of too much or too little of feed
Forage management: need to keep face of pile smooth, straight to minimize DM deviations with silo,
top cover is important, discard moldy silage
You want uniformed feed intake for cows
Variability in feed intake can be due to:
-acidosis
-feeding too much grain
-TMR too dry so can sort to select grains
-Can get when fermented forage is changing in moisture and not being adjusted to this
Manure scoring :
• presence of grain in the manure indicated poor digestion because of the processing of the grains or
indication of acidosis
• shinny manure indicates that there is VFA production in the hind gut and this changes the pH of the
hind gut and the gut produces mucus to protect itself
Strategies for grouping cows for TMR
1. Transition/ fresh cow group (2-3 weeks post partum)
2. Cows in early lactation (3-4 months of lactation)
3. mid-lactation group
4. late lactation group
5. dry cow group
a. far-off dry cows
b. close-up dry cows
6. first-calf heifer group (growth equipment’s, smaller size, 10% more milk)
