Document Summary

The narrator is speaking in past tense, seems like she is an adult looking back on this time in her life (p. 17 vocabulary) Girls (narrator, mother, grandmother, flora): domestic chores, inside, cooking, cleaning, subservient, gardening, boring routine, nurturing, frivolous, imaginative, emotional, safety, undervalued, underappreciated. Show what their lifestyle was like, what their daily routine was, who the narrator spent her time with. She likes being outdoors, the work seemed more important. Importance of the mother"s work is not realized, father"s is. Feels like her mother resents her for being different from the stereotypical girl. She fails because flora had nowhere to run to, only other farms, any other neighbors or farmers who saw her would have just called her dad anyway. Angry about the fact that as she and her brother grow older she is less welcome to help on the farm and laird is kind of replacing her, did it out of spite.
