Most students have a familiarity with drama as many of you have studied a variety of plays, most often shakespeare, in other educational institutions. Shakespeare"s othello later on in the course, but we will begin with a modern play by. Sharon pollock (1936), a well-known contemporary western canadian playwright. She has an interest in historical situations, which are evident in her plays the komagata. Maru incident, walsh, whiskey six cadenza, and fair liberty"s call. Blood relations, the most famous of these and originally called my name is lisbeth, is set in 1902, ten years after miss lizzie borden was acquitted of murdering her parents. In this modern drama, we are able to look at the relationships of parents/children, husbands/wives, and siblings within the confines of the patriarchal structure in america. In blood relations, the bordens are well-to-do financially, and the pressures of their social position and obligations affect the dynamics of the family relationships.
