Document Summary

Liver makes all cholesterol, but we also take in cholesterol in our diet. Gastric lipase starts digestion of lipids, but not essential. All that is necessary is pancreatic enzymes delivered to small intestine. Major digestion of lipids takes place in small intestine. Smaller fat droplets in small intestine are surrounded by bile acids. Increases surface area of fat molecule and makes grease soluble to dissolve. Once fat droplets are emulsi ed, pancreatic lipase attacks surface of fat droplets. Monoglycerides and free fatty acids are the product of emulsi cation. -promote transfer of lipid by-products to epithelial cells. -deliver by-products directly onto the apical membrane surfaces and these lipids are then passively absorbed by microvilli. -once they are absorbed, fatty acids and monoglycerides are then resynthesized b/c they have to be secreted in a different form. Chylomicrons are exocytosed and go directly into lymphatic vessels.
