Charles darwin though primary emotions (anger, happiness, surprise, fear, disgust and sadness) were universally understood via facial expressions. All humans encode and decode emotions the same way and with equal accuracy. Encode: to express or emit nonverbal behaviour, such as smiling or patting on the back. Decode: to interpret the meaning of the nonverbal behaviour. Facial expressions may sometimes be hard to interpret accurately because (1) people may try to appear less emotional than they are (2) people may simultaneously blend several affects. Affect blend is a facial expression in which one part of the face is registering one emotion while another part of the face is registering a different emotion. Display rules are culturally determined rules that assign which nonverbal behaviours are appropriate to display and which aren"t.
