PSY 226 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Cognitive Dissonance, Motivation, Social Comparison Theory
Document Summary
Cultural differences: many asian and other collectivist cultures have an interdependent view of self-concept. The define themselves in terms of ones relationships to other people and recognize that one"s behaviour is often determined by the thoughts feelings and actions of others. Gender differences: men tend to have an independent view of self, women tend to have a relational, interdependent view, and to define themselves more in relation to others. This difference between genders varies by cultures: gender differences are found among individualistic cultures o. In collectivity cultures that emphasize interdependence both genders have shown an equal tendency to the relational/collectivist view of the self: men in individualistic cultures do not completely lack interdependence. Their interdependence, however, is defined more as in collectivist interdependence for social groups such as sports teams. People do not rely on introspections as often as one would think: when people do use introspection, the reasons for their feelings and behaviours can be hidden from conscious awareness.
