Document Summary

Identify the basic issues that need to be kept in mind when studying perception. Interpret the basic idea behind the gestalt and other approaches to perception. Analyze the multisensory interaction and integration that occur during perception. Describe the relationship between conscious awareness and cognition. Cognition begins as soon as info enters cognitive system. Series of processes responsible for turning 2d light, pressor, etc to a percept (ie. We sense and perceive through 5 major channels: vision, audition, touch, taste & smell: thinking is dominated by what we see & hear. Sensation: physiological processes: processes of ear, eye & skin receptors take initial stimulus (light, pressure, vibration) electrochemical language of nervous system. From neurons to brain, electrochemical message transformed to percepts (cat, car, horn) Involved in immediate organization & interpretations of sensation. Bottom-up processing: flow of info from stimulus to neural activity to identification (driven by stimulus) Stimulus itself (the data) leads to sensible percept.
