PSY 207 Lecture 8: Chapter 4.2
Document Summary
There is no universal outcome for death and loss. What is lost in bereavement: predictability, control and permanence. Failure to address this issue can mean the griever is unable to make sense of the loss. The purpose of grieving is meaning reconstruction in a world that is challenged by loss. Medical intervention in addition to exposure can reduce the symptoms of ptsd by changing the neurochemistry. Grief is perhaps simply a part of our human experience and therefore something we must experience. When is it grief and when is it depression? ie. to seek medical intervention. There are many techniques, embedded in earlier and later theories of grief, that move the bereaved toward resolution . Many other issues, personal experiences in particular, affect the people"s capacity to be helpful. This lecture is focused on normal or typical death and grief. The relationship of trauma, traumatic death and traumatic grief has not been addressed in this lecture.
