WGST 220 February 10 2014 1 Crystal Queer Presentation • Drag queen: are predominantly gay and bisexual men who dress in "female attire" for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: a socio-political statement, playing with gender norms, as a gay relevant art form (a part of queer culture), self-expression or a way to have fun o Gender norms, gender queer, gender fucking o Theatrical kind of thing o Characters they portray o A way to raise money -- shows and activities • Drag king: are predominantly lesbian and bisexual women who dress in "male attire" " for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: a socio-political statement, playing with gender norms, as a gay relevant art form (a part of queer culture), self-expression or a way to have fun o Drag Kinds due a lot more gender fucking than Drag Queens (usually) • Sometimes classified as transsexual/transgender o Tension in the community • From thought to creation o There are a variety of ways individuals can establish their drag name • Named by drag mother/father -- traditionally • Creating your own family • Sexual puns -- especially in the Drag King society • For the love of alliteration • Why Crystal Clear? o Madonna, Nikki Finn & Who's That Girl o I love alliteration o Reflected my personality and the character I wanted to develop • Drag families o Establishing a Family can be an integral part of drag culture o Drag Families can also be called "houses", "clans", "Dynasties" or "covens" o Drag Family types tend to be material o Can be welcomed into many houses/namesake • Drag titles in Saskatchewan o Organization/events o Bar titles o Mr. and Miss Gay titles o Imperial Court Tiles • Emperor and Empress • Imperial Crown Prince and Princess • Imperial Grand Duke and Duchess • Entertainer of the Year • Perpetual Titles • Lower Homes titles: title for one year • Mr. and Miss Diva's and Mr. and Miss Gay Saskatoon WGST 220 February 10 2014 2 o Miss Diva's queen of Hearts established in Feb 1998 o Mr. Diva's King of luck established in March 1999 o Name changed in 2001 and both titles now awarded in Feb • Miss Diva's (Year) Miss Gay (number) • Mr. Diva's (year) Mr. Gay (number) o August 2011 became a non-profit organization o Feb 2012 removed gender restrictions form titles • Do not to be a male to run for Mr. or a female to run for Miss • Crystal Clear Won -- now what? o Plan a year o Establish a drag community in Saskatoon o Learn this gay relevant art form o Unpleasant surprises -- stigma • Gay male community -- do not like drags representing them • Drag the kiss of romantic death • Lesbian community -- playing into the oppressive stereotypes • Sins of the past -- court system did a lot of damage • Work place -- "why would you do that to yourself" • Imperial Sovereign Court if the Golde
