Viral diseases have plagued humans since the time of the pharoahs! Dimitri ivanovski was the one who discovered that there must be something else other than bacteria causing infection tobacco mosaic virus because he filtered out all bacteria and yet the fluid was still infecting tobacco plant leaves. Felix d"herelle discovered bacteriophages and coined the term plaque . He discovered this by growing up his bacteria overnight and occasionally some of these plates would go clear. If you took that culture and put drips onto other bacterial lawns, you would clear a circle (plaques). Walter reed and his colleagues were working at the military and he discovered that yellow fever was a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. He was determined to figure out where this virus was coming from. He did a bunch of unethical trials but it was still a good scientific trial. He cut the transmission of yellow fever by moving away from swamps.
