Document Summary

This week as we look at integument (skin) keep in mind that this is an opportunity for reviewing many of the tissues that have been studied thus far. It consists of epithelia, connective tissue, and has some muscle tissue, and nerve. As you procede through this lab session, try to keep in mind how structure and function are related. This lab is quite short, and so you can use it to keep in touch with previous material. The skin (integument) consists of the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The epidermis consists of stratified squamous epithelium that occurs in varying thicknesses over the body. The stratum basale, the basal layer of cuboidal cells situated just above the basal lamina. These are stem cells that provide the regenerative ability of the surface layer of the integument: the stratum spinosum, (alternatively called the stratum malpighii) is a zone of cells with a distinctive space between the cells.
