CLAS104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Lightning, Theogony, Silver Age
Document Summary
Variety in stories with respect to creation of humans. E. g. sometimes zeus created humans by himself, sometimes with others. Wasn"t important to have one true story, weren"t bothered by contradiction (life is contradictory too: hesiod"s versions(~600 bce) Doesn"t really have a positive view of life: five ages of humanity, gold -time of cronos. Lived like olympian gods (no sickness, no old age (would just die in their sleep when the time came), had feasts, were carefree, didn"t word for food (food sprung up from the ground) etc. ) Watched over humans and provided them with food after they died: silver -made by olympian gods. Lived 100 years as infants, then had a short adulthood. Became deities after they died: bronze -made by zeus, not like silver at all. Made of ash trees (greeks used to them to make spear shafts violence), had bronze horses, bronze armour, bronze tools, lived like aries (war-like)
