Document Summary

Myth: a myth is a traditional tale with secondary partial reference to something of collective importance . Stories that are passed down that speaks out to the targeted culture in a certain way. Culture explains itself to itself (saying something about itself) Describes patterns of behaviour which people are expected to emulate. Originally comes from bronze age homer"s tales. References to chariots (did not have chariots in homer"s times) Useful: alexander the great kept two things under his bed: knife (for defense just in case) and a copy of the iliad (used myths of homer especially the iliad as a model) Resonant: story of oedipus resonates with you and really pulls at your emotions through the way the plot unfolds. Sophocles takes the story of homer"s oedipus and changes the ending so that. Oedipus ends up in exile instead of continuing on ruling as king. Able to highlight the fears and hope of society during a certain time period.
