Lecture 3: punic wars of the middle republic/ slaves and freedpersons/ social structure/ marriage/ 3 punic wars -> punic = carthaginian or phoenician. These guys were fearless -> travelled all over the palce. Started rumors about their adventures (dangerous monsters, etc. ) so others did not steal their trade routes. Purple dye worth 15 to 20 times its weight in gold. Trade by sea across mediterranean, as well as from britain to west africa. By land trade caravans to central africa & persia: control up to 300 trade colonies around western mediterranean. Trade colonies seldom have more than 1,000 inhabitants. Small cites = easy to defend: very religious. Worshiped old gods -> gods that blessed them in their travels. Sacrificed children in time of great distress. Some of them could be dark in their worships: they were practical -> paid attention to profit and loss.
