CS100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Networking Cables, International Mobile Station Equipment Identity, Asynchronous Communication
Document Summary
In this module we will introduce what a computer network is and how computers communicate with each other. All the stuff that is connected together so that two computers can communicate with each other. The design and structure of the internet has clearly dominated and is the primary focus. The world wide web (www) is the most visible part of the internet. (there"s much more than just the web) Review some communication fundamentals including different communication layers, which help understand computer networks. Synchronous communication is when both parties are communicating at exactly the same time. (ex. Asynchronous communication is when there is a time lag in the communication. (ex. An instant message chat or a video streaming application seems like it"s synchronous, but there is a small time lag making it asynchronous. We will explore how communication occurs at multiple layers. Consider a normal (vocal) conversation it"s so easy that babies can do it.
