Importance of surface water: drinking water, irrigation, ecological habitat, transport of sediments and nutrients, recipient of waste discharges, flooding, power generation, recreational use (parks, fisheries (economics) Urban/rural: predict impact of land use changes (ecological, water quality, and stream flow) the way we build up environment on top of them. > ppl try not to live on houses that are built on flood plane: some aspects of gw / sw interaction poorly understood. Largest river basin/watershed in north america = mississippi river drainage basin. Water from rain, snowmelt, or springs forms streams, creeks, or brooks. These merge into rivers, and eventually reaches the ocean: tributary = a smaller river flowing into a larger one, watershed = the area of land drained by a river and its tributaries.
