ENGL101B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Dialectic, Sophist
Document Summary
This week explored the introduction of classical rhetoric with examples from aristotle and gorgias. These two texts are very important to this week"s theme. The first text that we explored this week is titled the encomium of helen by gorgias. This was important to the theme because it introduced sophism. Within this text, gorgias speaks about defending helen and using logic to purify helen. I believe that this is important because people use language as a means of communication and persuasion is a vital part of making decisions or speaking out against something to trying to prove a point. It has to be produced at the right time in order to make an impact or change. The second text that we explored this week is titled rhetoric by aristotle. The first sentence says rhetoric is a counterpart of dialectic . He states that rhetoric is concerned with reasonable and probably arguments instead of absolute knowledge.
