Document Summary

Eliciting specific emotions: anger: convince the reader that they deserve respect and deny them, kindness: a demonstration of easing pain; the perception of kindness is a function of the supply and demand for help. Also, flatter the audience and make them special somehow. Pity: a form of empathic pain for somebody who does not deserve it and which we can expect to befall us imminently. Pity cannot be felt by those who have suffered immensely or by those who have never experienced any form of pain. We can only pity those with whom we can identify, but not those who are close to us. Occurs when a person deserving of good receives a worse verdict in life, work, etc. We can generate pity by implying that the pitiful event is imminent to the audience. Fear: an anticipatory pain of some potential evil in the future; rooted in anxiety. It requires the audience to lack confidence about the future.
