Description of the scene presents how we see it. How are we trying to get other people to identify with our version of reality. The pentad is a way to talk about the way people talk about. Not interested in the causes, but the causation. By identifying how the work construes the pentad we get an idea of how it constructs reality. Determining the elements is only the first step. Commentators and criticizers forget to look at the ratios. Makes a difference whether they explain through where vs why. Looking at how the selections and the deflections are made. Ratios look at the motives behind the selections and the deflections. Attribute the motive to the agent versus attributing it to the environment. Homeless because they don"t want to help themselves. Can"t because no mental health institutes or w/e. Allows you to deflect attention from an action by replacing with something else.
