Death masks evolution possibly: head of a woman. Not as many female portraits as male. Difficult to date just by looking at the face, but hairstyles often indicate date. He took this so seriously, that he took some elements of alexander"s look and put them into his own portrait. Lines give the illusion of a smile. Very detailed hair: portrait of pompey the great. Notice the eyes - heavily lidded dreamy quality. All characteristics of things alexander was famous for in his portraits. We know from sources that alexander did this very consciously: the four pompeian wall painting styles. This categorization has fallen out of favour because many other paintings have been found outside the region and dating to earlier. Dealing with fresco -- but sometimes tempera. First style: imitates stone masonry -- painted plaster to look like marble.
