My def: any group or society where i share something in common with, be it a value, a geographic location, etc. Outside pressure on entry - dealing with the other. Scale allowing some level of personal knowability, familiarity, recognition. A masters student found that people were self-selecting communities into food categories, such as vegan/vegetarian, etc. Our generation is more self-selecting of our identity. Practical necessity of cooperation, also inherent inclination and capacity (kropotkin) and learned capacity (collaborative skills) Phenomenon of environmental beings as much as social beings. Survival of the fittest - originally believed to be the strongest, most fierce, but now it"s believed it was the ones that were best at cooperation. Sub-groupings interactions with adjacent communities (ex. kin) You learned from your community, learned customs, learned from wisdom of elders. Traditional cultures, don"t change much due to the risk. Based on how much you don"t know about the world, and learning from those with experience.
