Document Summary

Advantages and disadvantages between vector and raster data structures. Very large vector databases have been built for diferent purposes: most common in transportaion, uility, markeing applicaions. Provides for precise posiioning of features in space. Representaion is more intuiive and reminiscent of the familiar analog map. Topology can be described explicitly good for network analysis. Retrieval, updaing, and generalizaion of graphics & atributes are possible. Each spaial enity has a diferent shape & form. Some types of analyical funcions are complex and diicult e. g. overlay analysis. Abundant data sources (i. e. remote sensing, aerial photos, scanning) Easy to conceptualize as a method of represening space. Raster programs (algorithms) are oten computaionally simpler and faster than vector. Beter for (a) modelling coninuous features than vector and (b) analyses that involve spread, low, or difusion processes (i. e. surface modelling, overlay) Decreases the reliability of area and distance measures: need for large storage capacity.
