International polar year first ipy: 1882-1883: polar processes are linked to worldwide change, the arctic is the home to many global changes happening due to sea ice and glaciation. Storms and el ni o may be linked to what is occurring in the arctic: arctic sea ice: one global climate forcing function. Value of sea ice has been reduced year by year since: it is predicted to be gone by 2040. Changes in the arctic cryosphere could cause major changes in the marine food web. The whole arctic ecosystem depends on the ice: ice algae covers the bottom of the ice, which feeds the lowest level of the food chain. If this disappears, the whole system will collapse. This is a new discovery; it"s about 5-6 years old. Geography is the science that studies the relationships among natural systems, geographic areas, society, cultural activities, and the interdependence of all these over space.
