China"s prosperity hinged on three balancing acts. Between regions of hardship and regions of prosperity. China had extensive urbanization long before the rest of world. But cities have always depended on the countryside for their prosperity, and the line between city and countryside has always been blurred. The principle role of old cities in china was as commercial centres. In cities, officials and merchants interacted to tap and regular markets and means of production, creating wealth for both citizens and government. The role of cities as centres of trade and administration began very early in china"s history. China"s recorded history begins with the shang dynasty. The shang dynasty ruled parts of northern and central china. its capital city was located at anyang near the border. In 1949, china established a centrally planned economic system on the model of the soviet union.
